How Does it Work?
Homeowner signs the Denman Housing Pledge
Homeowner notifies DCLTA that their home is for sale.
1% of home sale revenue is donated to the DHP Fund
Donation is dispersed to individual project of your choice.
The Homeowner’s Pledge: A
Denman Island Innovation
First, ask yourself as a homeowner…is this not a great way to leave a lasting legacy to your home community of Denman Island? Then….
You sign the Homeowner’s Housing Pledge at any time, and when your house sells in the near or distant future, 1% of the sale price is donated to the Denman Housing Fund.
If you sell your property for $600,000, that equals $6,000. If the sale price is $1.5 million, the donation would be $15,000.
With enough uptake of the pledge, this could provide approximately $250,000 annually for affordable and attainable housing!
It appears that neither the market, standard funding mechanisms, nor government programs can entirely solve the housing crisis. It’s time to innovate! When you sell your home, the price reflects the value of the property. Some of this value is created by the community—the people who protect wild spaces, build trails, clean our beaches, sponsor music and festivals, and provide health care and education—and from the innumerable other acts of neighbourliness that bring us joy and resilience.
Taking the Homeowner’s Housing Pledge recognizes the link between the value of your property and the community that makes Denman such a desirable place to live.
