Denman Green

“It is so hard to find a place to rent, that I may be forced to leave the island and my daughter who needs me.”

“I was in a situation for 2 years where I got kicked out in summer months. I work full time, have a professional job and had to sleep on the beach or out of the back of my truck. I have given myself one more year to see if housing changes here or I will leave because I cannot get farther ahead living like this.”

“I have a friend who has moved at least five times in the last two years… is currently living in a travel trailer which won’t be adequate in the winter…”

Housing needs on Denman Island are great.

Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation and Statistics Canada measure “core housing need” described as households in dwellings that are inadequate (need major repair), unsuitable (too small or too costly), or unaffordable (costing more than 30 percent of before-tax income). In the summer of 2021 the Census found 105 of Denman Island’s households were in core housing need. This is 15% of Denman’s households.

Denman Green: an affordable community.

The Denman Green Housing project has passed all regulatory hurdles and now waits on a confirmation from BC Housing to fund the project. The project will create a community of healthy homes for individuals, families and seniors who live and work on the island. Sustainability will be a guiding principle of the project, with no purpose more important than to maintain a vibrant island full of opportunities for all ages.
